September 17, 2019: Update on Liberal Education Redesign

Colleagues,

In early June we sent a memo to the campus community with an update on the work of the Liberal Education Redesign Committee (LERC). We asked people to consider the proposals over the summer, if they had time, and we did indeed receive excellent feedback, including some fully fleshed out alternative proposals.

The LERC report has been revised in response to this summer feedback and now also includes more information about the committee’s proposal for course evaluation and oversight.

The committee is again inviting, encouraging, feedback and discussion on the report and the proposed models via an online forum. The committee will review feedback submitted to the online forum prior to forwarding materials to the UMTC Faculty Senate, which will be hosting a discussion of the potential changes at a Faculty Senate meeting this fall.

We thank the faculty and staff who have engaged in this work over the last several months, and look forward to continued robust discussion in the coming months. Again, the faculty “own” the curriculum, so please contribute your views as we move toward the Faculty Senate’s action on these matters.

Sincerely,

Karen Hanson
Executive Vice President and Provost

Bob McMaster
Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education
