June 3, 2015: Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs: Nominations and Applications are Invited

Dear Colleagues,

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. I want to express my admiration and deep appreciation to Allen Levine for providing strong interim leadership during this past year, and am grateful that he will remain until a new vice provost is named and in place.

Al’s broad and deep institutional experience and his strong relationships with academic leaders helped to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities connected with faculty and academic affairs during this past year, a period during which he helped integrate strategic planning with our academic and administrative responsibilities and priorities. He brought a unique perspective to this work, having served not only as inaugural dean of CFANS through summer 2013, but also as faculty liaison for special initiatives, including interdisciplinary research and educational technologies. I am grateful to Al for postponing his well-deserved sabbatical. His future plans include returning to his academic work and serving as president of The Obesity Society.

The vice provost for faculty and academic affairs provides oversight of policies and processes related to faculty life and promotion and tenure, academic recognition and achievement, and faculty development. The vice provost will report to me and will hold a 100%-time, 12-month, annually renewable senior academic administrative appointment. Terms and conditions are negotiable depending upon prior commitments and responsibilities of the selected candidate; start date is negotiable between August 2015 and spring semester 2016. Candidates must be tenured full professors with a minimum of three years of academic administrative experience. The full position description is available at http://academic.umn.edu/provost/communications/Vice-Provost-FAA-Posn-Desc.pdf (no longer available).

I invite members of the University community to nominate tenured professors who would provide the leadership needed to serve as vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. Please send a letter of nomination and a brief statement of the nominee’s qualifications for the position to [email protected]. To apply, please send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references to: [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed beginning July 1, 2015 and accepted until the position is filled.

Thank you for nominating colleagues for this position, and please join me in thanking Al for his continued outstanding leadership and service.

Sincerely,

Karen Hanson,
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
